THE PIXAR THEORY
The Pixar theory was an idea created by Jon Negroni on his blog. The theory is that every movie/franchise that Pixar has created is all linked together and they are all on the same universe. These movies include (in order of creation): "Toy Story", "A Bug’s Life", "Toy Story 2", "Monsters Inc.", "Finding Nemo", "The Incredibles", "Cars", "Ratatouille", "Wall-E", "Up", "Toy Story 3", "Cars 2", "Brave", and "Monsters University". Essentially, the theory covers that animals and objects begin to devolop intelligence and overthrow the polluting humans. Eventually, all life is eradicated and then later returned to earth, causing huge mutations and the ability to time travel. Most of the theory revolves around Boo, the little girl in "Monsters Inc". Here is my interpretation on the theory. Caution: this theory contains MAJOR plot spoilers on almost every single Pixar movie. If you were planning on watching these movies and want to keep the end unspoiled for yourself, do not read this article.
The theory begins with the movie "Brave". This is because "Brave" is the earliest movie ever made in a sense of what time period it takes place in (which is the Dark Ages). "Brave" is about a Scottish kingdom in the Dark Ages, and explains how almost all animals in Pixar movies can talk and/or have human-like characteristics. Anyway, in "Brave", the witch (who happens to disappear every time she goes through a door. Sound familiar?) enchants several objects and animals so that they can speak and do things that they shouldn't be able to do. Eventually, these talking animals interbreed so that there are lots of talking animals all over the place. The objects that the witch enchants also develop a sort of artificial intelligence which is passed on to all sorts of technology. These two developing intelligences are more and more apparent as the theory continues, eventually leading to complete rebellion.
The next movie brought into the theory is "Ratatouille", where the more intelligent animals also begin to develop a growing personality, which is evident when Remy the rat wants to cook, something that most animals couldn't do or desire to do. But it never really says what happens to Chef Skinner, the weird short antagonist of "Ratatouille". Negroni believes that he started telling people about the intelligence of the animals. These rumors that Skinner started spread to Charles Muntz, the dog guy, who is the antagonist of "Up". Muntz began to develop the dog collars that translated the dog's thoughts in an attempt to further speed up the intelligence of the animals. Although these dogs were all set free, they still retained some intelligence. Now we can really see tension between animal and human relationships. The technology revolution hinted at the end of "Up" is caused by technology devolved by humans that test on the intelligent animals. And who creates this technology? BNL, the same company that is alluded to in almost every movie. Indeed, in "Wall-E," it is revealed that BNL has taken over the entire world. BNL's rise is shown in "Toy Story 3", where Buzz's batteries were made by BNL and in "Finding Nemo" where BNL has a news article on their website about "a beautiful underwater world". Now, humans are really starting to cross the line on animals and are invading their world.
Now we can really emphasize the technology revolution that occurs in Pixar what with technology gaining more intelligence and such. In the "Incredibles", we have Syndrome. He is trying to kill all the “Supers.” How does he do this? He uses an AI “killbot” called the Omnidroid. This Omnibot is a rogue developing AI system which was specifically said in the movie that it is intelligent enough to take orders. Eventually, however, it stops taking orders from Syndrome and tries to kill everyone in the city, basically showing us that technology hates humans and wants to eliminate all of them. Now why does technology hate humans? Obviously, the animals have a reason to hate them because humans are experimenting on them and polluting earth, but why does technology hate humans? This is where "Toy Story" comes into play. The toys are used and discarded, and a lot of them hate their owners/ previous owners for abandoning them or not playing with them. Since "The Incredibles" is set to take some place in the 50’s, it is safe to say that it has been 40-50 years since it has happened. By the mid-2000’s, all of the super humans have been eradicated by the machines, and the machines have lived long enough to develop BNL, which is later used to take over the world and create a humanless world like is seen in "Cars". By the time "Cars" happens, the humans have been gone or killed and only AI technology remains, hence having no organic life left. Then, the events in "Wall-E" happen and humans are brought back to Earth. The tree that is planted at the end is very similar in appearance to the tree in "Bug’s Life", implying that it is the same tree. Therefore, the events in "Bug’s Life" directly follow the events of "Wall-E". This further shows the evolution of the animal’s intelligence, who now have a society directly based off of human society and now have traits from humans.
Now, with no humans left on earth, the animals begin to mutate. They mutate so much that in a far, far distant future, they turn into the Monsters seen in "Monsters Inc." These monsters, with no humans left to supply them with energy, create the doors which use time travel in order to go back and see the humans and harness the power of screams (and later laughs). However, they accidentally drag a human girl into the mix... Boo. Boo, Sully, and Mike go on a big adventure, and they eventually dump Boo back in her own time. However, Boo now knows about a future world and she knows that time travel is possible. She becomes obsessed with finding Sully and eventually finds the secret of time travel. She goes to the place where magic is most prevalent with the Will-of-the-Wisps (in "Brave") and tries to fashion the doors so that she can find Sully again. Yes, Boo becomes the Witch in "Brave." Also, further pointing to this fact is that the Witch has a carving of Sully on her door.
And there you have it. That is the Pixar theory, created by Jon Negroni, linking every movie that Pixar has made together. If you want to read an even more in-depth analysis, go to Jon Negroni’s page at this link:
